Last weekend Bruges was presenting the refined design of the Make over of the Zand Square after consultation with residents, merchants and restaurants. "We have chosen a completely open square that is classified as a mosaic," says major Renaat Landuyt. "We paid a lot of attention to the mobility in and around the square."
Bruges is strongly committed to the cyclists. There will be provided space for 700 bikes, which are routed through underground rolling hoops, a proven system.
In addition to the redesign of the square, also the King Albert I Park, close to the "Concertgebouw" will be addressed. It will be integral part of the concept.
The start of the project is foreseen for January 2017. The new square should be finished by July 2018. The cost is provisionally estimated at EUR 9 million.
