New Year shopping in Bruges

During the end of the year period you can again enjoy some shopping in Bruges. This is possible in more than 350 shops between ’t Zand and the Market Square, but also in neighbouring streets. In your search for a unique handmade New Year’s present, a visit to the workshops and shops with the label ‘Handmade in Bruges’ is a total must. The lovely stalls of the Christmas market in the Market Square and the Simon Stevin Square also add to the atmosphere.

Christmas market (17 November – 2 January)

The Christmas market in Bruges is an unmissable tradition. In the centre of the town you will find plenty of food, drink and souvenir stalls. You can discover great gifts, or drink a warming jenever or glühwein.  On the ice rink in the Market Square you can pirouette in the shadow of the Belfort. Those who do not have skates can rent some at the rink.

Pieter Pourbus and the forgotten masters
(From Friday 13 October 2017 to Sunday 21 January 2018)

The best exhibition of the year-end is no doubt ‘Pieter Pourbus and the forgotten masters’. You rediscover centuries old and forgotten paintings in today’s Bruges. You come face to face with artists such as Pieter Pourbus, Marcus Gerards, Pieter I Claeissens...

The exhibition takes you to the Bruges of the sixteenth century. The town is suffering under an economic recession and is emptying. Traders leave the town and the inhabitants become increasingly poorer. Only a limited but regular core of art lovers continues to buy art of the highest quality.

New Year concert (Sunday 7 January 2018 from 15:00 to 23:59)

In the Concert building, the New Year is traditionally started with swirling dance music. Apart from the classics by the emperor of the waltz, Johann Strauss jr., Broadway hits are also on the menu. Dance tunes, drinking parties and cheerful festivities are all evoked by the most swirling and danceable music. Star conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, recent winner of three Grammy’s, loosens his devils and treats you to divine virtuoso music. Cheers!
