The festival of the Canals is held every four years in late
August. Traditional events showcasing the Middle Ages and Baroque
period take place on the Bruges and Burg Square canals.
The heart of the festival is a
series of re-enactments of episodes in Bruges' long and eventful
history. This festival,
staged along the beautifully illuminated canals and in the Burg
Square, is a captivating pageant with various scenes taking the
spectators back into the fascinating history of Bruges. The
scenes, which must be seen as separate performances, are staged in
succession and without intermission. In total, over 400 musicians,
singers and dancers are involved.
The
spectator is therefore bound neither by the opening hour, nor by a
certain order. Starting from one of the different entrances, he
can wander at will from one scene to the other.
